02:52 pm - 2006: the heat winning finalists
Official heats for 2006 are now closed! Here is your current list of finalists, we will have a quick mop up of the also-rans tomorrow to get the last few places in the top 40 filled.

In the interests of meta-polling I draw your attention to the two three NOW albums of 2006:
Now 63
Now 64
Now 65

See you next week to review my maths skills innit. [nb: do not review my maths skills]

12:51 pm - Songs of 2006: Heat #6
We are at the final proper heat of 2006; there'll be some mathematical mop-up at the end but this is pretty much the final curtain. As it's a short heat (36 rather than 40 contenders) you only get FIVE ticks. Which is a shame, as the end of the alphabet is looking great- like all good compilations it's got a dodgy indie collection at the end but there's some ruddy great hits before then.

Through from the last round were the following-
Girls Aloud- Something Kinda Ooooh (14 ticks)
Lily Allen - Smile (12 ticks) (this surprises me)
Rihanna - SOS (9 ticks)
The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control (9 ticks)
Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind (7 ticks)
Jojo - Too Little Too Late (7 ticks)

(Okay, actually all of that lot surprise me)

The winner in the Heat 4 playoff was Amy Winehouse and her Rehabs. Amy will no doubt be very pleased about this victory and if you pop along to the right place in Camden you can probably join her in celebrating.

Extra (sixth) ticks in this round go to: [info]braisedbywolves, [info]infov0re and [info]askbask

01:06 pm - Songs of 2006: Heat #4 final-qualifier playoff
Heat 4, a battlefield on which many SOLID GOLD TRACKS lie beaten and bloodied, has left us with a four-way tie as this lot haul themselves up for another go. There can be ONLY ONE WINNER; go forth and literally pick some pop.

It's the penultimate Heat of 2006! I can't do maths it transpires (or rather 'didn't think about needing to do any maths when I started this') so we will also actually have a post-heat-6 poll of the nearly-rans to get the numbers up to 40 but we're getting there.

Through from the Heat Of Death:
Justin Timberlake - SexyBack (12)
Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous (11) (this rly surprises me! I thought it was the weakest single)
Taylor Swift - Should've Said No (10)
Nelly Furtado - Say It Right (10)
Hot Chip - Over & Over (9)

And there's a four-way tie on 7, more of which later...

RULES )

Extra ticks from last round go to [info]koganbot and [info]credoimprobus. (GUYS, it is so easy! You just write a thing in a box! You can lie if you like although obviously I'd rather you didn't and it wouldn't be in the interests of FAIR POLLIN' which might as well be our only attempt at a purpose etc. etc.)

POLLS )

Poll closes lunchtime GMT, Tuesday 3rd May.

01:16 pm - Songs of 2006: Heat #3 final-qualifier playoff
Last time we did a qualifying playoff it was discovered, to genuine shock, that Poptimists are not secretly indie after all (we turned this diagnosis round in the next heat, regrettably) as Beyonce, Cascada, Fergie and Blog 27 all sailed through leaving guitar fiends the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to drop out.

Mathematically safe from Heat 3 are the following 5:
Lily Allen - LDN (14 ticks, to my utter astonishment)
Beyonce- Irreplaceable (13 ticks)
Cassie - Me & U (12 ticks)
Nelly Furtado - Maneater (11 ticks)
Camera Obscura (!!!) - Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken (9 ticks, good to see we are back on the indie horse)

Which leaves the following two on six ticks each and now in what Chezza Cole would accurately describe as a FITE FOR YR LOVE. Will Lupe Fiasco land a few low blows or will Cassie outrun him? The answer *seems* predetermined but this isn't a match I ever would've expected...

01:07 pm - Songs of 2006: Heat #4
Time for another heat and CRIKEY is this one bringing the hits. When I was typing out the poll I found myself wincing every other entry for the last 20 or so as I realised how many MONSTROUS STORMERS there were here; I think this one will probably be very tight.

[The last one has produced a final-qualifying-place tie, so I will do another post about that in a minute innit]

RULES )

As there are bank holidays a-happening, this poll will stay open until LUNCHTIME WEDNESDAY 27th APRIL GMT.

[Also coming up for next week: TERRIBLE COMPILATIONS for EVERY OCCASION and a POLL ABOUT SUCH for every day the guvmint give us off werk, woohoo! So even if you can't remember 2006, you'll have something to tick if you're in front of a computer- they won't be time-sensitive so if you're not you can go back and do it later. ANYWAY, back to the job at hand...]

People with extra ticks this round: [info]lockedintheatti, [info]justfanoe, [info]koganbot and [info]credoimprobus. Y'all are gonna need 'em.

Right, sorry this was a week delayed- DDoS attacks and real life and all that.

You have SIX TICKS plus a potential BONUS TICKY in the offing for people willing to try new things. As it is now four grillion years since the last poll, I am afraid I am not well-practised enough in archaeology to find out who might deserve them from last time so we are starting with a clean slate on that front.

More on the rules )

You have until Wednesday (13th) lunchtime GMT to vote.
